For at least 800 years, the people of St Osyth have enjoyed the use of the Bury, and since the advent of the motor car, it has been used for free parking. Until, that is, the Sargeants, owners of City and Country Group PLC, bought the Priory a few years ago. Despite massive opposition, they have attempted to restrict access by means of a fence and gate that is in total contravention of planning laws, which they continue to ignore. Despite being told by Tendring District Council, The Parish Council and the Government's Planning Appeals Inspector that it should remain untouched, they intend to prevent parking and drive a new tree-lined road through it. They are intent on developing the Priory in any way they can, their claims that this is in the best interests of the village and the Priory are belied by the fact that they are property developers intent on gaining a financial return on their investment. It is now common knowledge that the Bury's legal status is at best, unclear. Prescriptive rights and a Royal Charter suggest that rights exist that they are attempting to quash in order to gain complete control of access. Access rights are absolutely vital to a property developer intending to profit from vandalising the Priory by knocking it into apartments. Although the Bury is not registered as common land, former owners have been unable to prove ownership. We must not allow City and Country Group PLC to destroy our heritage or prevent us from using the Bury. Concerned residents will be organising a meeting in the near future, with a view to forming an official pressure group to fight those that wish to ruin our village. Details will be posted here soon, we are counting on your support.
